Chelsea Pensioner takes flight

Chelsea Pensioner Michael Allen has taken a flight on Europe’s longest zip wire, reaching speeds of up to 100mph, to raise funds for the Royal Hospital Chelsea.
Michael, who has lived at the Royal Hospital for seven years, conquered his fear of heights by taking part in the challenge in Snowdonia National Park.
He said: “I can honestly say it was the most frightening and exhilarating thing I have ever done. As soon as I had completed the challenge I said ‘I will be having a drink tonight’.
“I am glad I faced the fear as I am very proud of the Royal Hospital Chelsea and what it represents. I still have a strong spirit of adventure.”
Royal Hospital Chelsea fundraising manager Kate Marsh said: “Michael is such an inspiration, we’re all incredibly proud of him and humbled by his commitment to raising funds for his home. The money he’s raised will help us provide a home, comradeship and the very highest standards of care for the Chelsea Pensioners of the future.”
